Art

Luckily for me, I have some lovely friends who are artists, and one of them invited me to an opening at an art gallery Thursday night. I love it when I ask my friends a question about a specific piece, and they actually teach me something about understanding art, instead of just saying to me, "Well, what do you think of it?" I mean really, they all have degrees in art. They had to do more than sit around for four-six years, finding varying ways to say, "This is what I think of this."
Last night, my friend was explaining why he thought one particular piece was better than the others and pointing out the importance of variations of depth, and I thought again, how fantastic it is that "truth" in one art form translates to all art forms. Varying depths in visual art is like varying levels in theatre, and rhythms in writing. It all transfers.
A couple of years ago, I was talking to another artist friend about a difficulty I was having with some writing. I was working on a play, and finding that to create a believable character (who was based on a real person) I had to alter her personality, or she would play as a stereotype, instead of a living person. My friend said that she experienced the same thing in her art, that often, she couldn't draw something exactly how it looked, or it would seem twisted and unrealistic.
I love how connected all truths are, and what that says about how to interpret our world, and understand each other.
We're such a simple lot, really.
