April 3, 2006

This is too funny: The House of Commons re-opens today and they will meet to elect a Speaker. Besides a lot of ceremonial walking back and forth between the Senate and the House of Commons, the candidates will give a five minute speech on why they should be elected and then there will be an elimination style of voting until one candidate receives 50% of the vote. But after all of this, the Prime Minister and leader of the Official Opposition are supposed to escort a “reluctant” Speaker to the chair.
Did you get that?
The Speaker is supposed to pretend he doesn’t want to be the Speaker.
Apparently, Speakers in Britain were beheaded when they appeared before the King and so now, this scene is re-enacted as he is led up to his new position.
Am I crazy here, or does this seem a little odd? The leaders of our country are acting out a drama? For whom exactly? Are we the audience? Are they?
Those crazy ol’ boys. They’re all just frustrated actors.
